Visitor statistics

Visitor statistics show you how many people visit your website and which pages they look at. You add them in the workspace under «Plan & billing» — the price is shown there; your assistant then builds them into the pages, and you publish once. From then on the numbers are in the «Statistics» tab — and you can ask your assistant at any time: «how many visitors did I have last week?»

Counting happens on a Matomo installation running on our own servers, in Switzerland and the EU. No cookies, with a shortened IP address — so you need no consent banner for it.

What you get

Four numbers, and for most websites that is all it takes:

  • Visits — how many people came by
  • Pages viewed — how many pages they looked at in total
  • Day by day — the trend over the last 7, 30 or 90 days
  • Most viewed pages — which pages get looked at most

A visit is one person coming by, not every page they look at. Someone who lands on the home page, reads the menu and then opens the contact page is one visit with three pages viewed.

Why there is no cookie banner

A banner is needed when a website collects data that lets individual people be recognised. That is exactly what does not happen here: no cookie is set, and the IP address is stored shortened. The data stays on our own servers in Switzerland and the EU and is passed on to nobody — there is no third party to permit.

The statistics still belong in your privacy policy. Your assistant gives you the matching paragraph when it builds them in, and inserts it if you want.

How to build them in

Tell your assistant: «build in the visitor statistics». It puts a small script into every HTML page, hands you the paragraph for the privacy policy, and reminds you to publish.

Publishing is the step that is easily forgotten: until the new state is out there, the script only sits in the workspace, and nothing is counted.

If you work with PHP pages, the assistant does not touch them automatically — the page footer often sits in a template that applies to many pages. It then places the script by hand, in the right spot.

If no numbers turn up

Three reasons, in this order:

  1. Not published yet. Counting starts when you publish.
  2. The script is missing from the page. Ask your assistant whether the statistics are built in — it can see that in the files.
  3. Nobody really came. For a freshly published website that is the most common case. Search engines need a few days.

Prefer Google Analytics?

You can build that in, it is your decision — your assistant will help. Two things belong with it: Google Analytics sets cookies, so you need a consent banner, and the data is then no longer with you. We see nothing of those statistics and charge nothing for them.

If you cancel

Counting stops, but your existing numbers are kept. If you book again later you find them again — including the comparison with the previous year. Your assistant takes the script out of the pages if you want; the paragraph in the privacy policy should then go too.
