Changing your website’s address
Your website’s identifier is part of its address and can be changed in the settings. If something was already published under the old address, this is a move: the old address stays reserved and permanently redirects to the new one, so that visitors and search engines come along. That is why the number of renamings is limited.
Why limited
Every renaming puts the old address into keeping for a year. Without a limit, an account could block dozens of short names in advance with a few clicks — and they would be gone for everyone else.
How long the old address redirects
One year. That is roughly the time a printed business card is still in circulation and a search engine has digested the move. After that the identifier becomes free again.
Your own domain is unaffected
If you have connected your own domain, it stays the address of your website. The identifier only concerns our technical address.
